(Napa, CA) – On August 13th, the Queen of the Valley Wellness Center brings Professor of Pediatrics and Endocrinology Dr. Robert Lustig to Napa’s Westin Hotel to share "Sugar: The Bitter Truth, What’s Really Behind the World Wide Obesity Epidemic?" about our nation’s ongoing love affair with sugar, in particular high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
More Americans are overweight and Type II diabetes is more prevalent than ever before. Men and women are 25 lbs heavier than they were 30 years ago. Even our children are heavier and less fit at every stage of development. And we have been offered a variety of convincing explanations for why that may be the case.
Excess fat consumption, lack of exercise and over consumption of carbohydrates all have been singled out as the "culprit" at one time or another. But University of California San Francisco (UCSF) researcher Dr. Robert Lustig believes the real cause for today’s world wide, obesity epidemic is something less often talked about. "Behaviors that some might refer to as gluttony and sloth are merely consequences—not the causes of the epidemic," Lustig says. "Food was just as abundant before obesity’s ascendance. The real problem is our steady, 30-year increase in sugar consumption, most often in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HCFS). That over consumption of HFCS drives fat storage and makes the brain think it is continually hungry, setting up a "vicious cycle."
The Queen of the Valley Wellness Center is sponsoring this evening event during which Dr. Lustig will share his insights and some possible solutions with our community. This event is an extension of the Wellness Center’s newly established Institute for Integrative Health, and part of the Queen of the Valley Medical Center’s ongoing outreach geared at educating the community about common yet preventable illnesses, such as diabetes.
