Queen of the Valley Medical Center's New Mobile Dental Clinic Hosts Community Open House, Wednesday May 11

(Napa, CA) – Queen of the Valley Medical Center's (QVMC) new Mobile Dental Clinic opens its doors to the public at a community open house, Wednesday, May 11th from 12 -6 p.m. The new mobile clinic, sporting expanded capacity and a sparkling new look, is part of QVMC’s community outreach efforts, designed to provide accessible, affordable care for many low income families that otherwise would not receive dental services. Visitors are invited to tour the new mobile unit, which will be parked in front of the Medical Center at 1000 Trancas St.

The new Dental Mobile Clinic allows for an expansion of low-cost dental services for young people in the Napa community. With the addition of an extra dental chair, clinic staff are able to see up to 330 patients per month – a 40% increase since October of last year, when the new unit arrived. This increased capacity has also enabled an increase in the number of sites served: The clinic now reaches nine (9) low income schools, including the recently added site at the Napa County Office of Education, which serves 472 pre-school, disadvantaged and special needs children and teens.

For more than seven years the Queen’s Mobile Dental Clinic program has served young residents of the Napa Valley, ranging in age from six months to the recently raised age of 21. The clinic brings care directly to low-income children at specific Napa County neighborhoods. During the past fiscal year, the mobile clinic had 2,750 visits (554 new patients). The results of this care are striking: patients seen by clinic staff demonstrate a 95% improvement in overall oral health after six months, and a 92% decrease in cavities in the same period.

Dr. Mohsenzadeh, Director of the Queen’s Mobile Dental Clinic, notes that the clinic fills a critical gap, serving uninsured and underinsured area residents: "The Queen’s Dental Clinic accepts all government-based dental insurance, and also sees uninsured patients on a sliding-fee scale, expanding dental services to many who would otherwise not receive dental care.

"And now," she notes, "our commitment to education and preventive care is paying off in improved oral hygiene among patients, with a sharply reduced need for immediate interventions." In fact, doctors report that more than 90% of patients are free of decay at their 6-month recall visits, with virtually all repeat patients showing improved knowledge and practice of oral hygiene and regular preventive care.

To make the clinic easy to find and identify as it moves through the sites and Napa County, the unit is now adorned with new a great colorful design and a snappy new slogan – "We Go Miles for Healthy Smiles." The slogan sprang from a competition among QVMC staff to develop a tagline that conveys the spirit and the message of the clinic’s vital work. Jaime Peñaherrera, Queen’s Director of Marketing, Communications and Public Relations expressed delight with the line chosen: "We believe the slogan sums up, in a fun and engaging way, the Mobile Dental Clinic's mission. Plus," Peñaherrera concludes, "it reminds us each day that the new unit is helping to put smiles on thousands of young faces and enhancing the quality of life for those in need – one tooth at a time."
