Joseph Carillo, MD
Physician
Joseph Carillo, MD

Dr. Joseph Carrillo is a pediatrician at Harvest Pediatrics in Napa and American Canyon, California.  He is the primary health care provider for hundreds of infants, children and adolescents and has been in the field of pediatric medicine for the past twenty years.  He moved to the Napa Valley in January 2004 from Boston, Massachusetts after a 17-year career at two of the nation’s leading health care institutions, Children’s Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School.

Born and raised in a small copper mining town in central Arizona, Dr. Carrillo’s professional life has been dedicated to advocating for children.  He is a graduate of the University of Arizona College of Medicine.  As a medical student in Tucson he was a founding member of a prenatal program for “Spanish-speaking” women.  These efforts resulted in a class action-like agreement among Tucson hospitals to support a comprehensive prenatal care to all women that was not based on their ability to pay for the services and resulted in improved infant health outcomes.

He completed his internship and residency at Children's Medical Center of Dallas and Ambulatory Pediatric Medicine Fellowship training at Children's Hospital Boston.  He was the first named Dyson Fellow in Pediatric Advocacy at Children’s Hospital Boston.

Since then, Dr. Carrillo has held numerous positions that include Executive Medical Director of the Martha Eliot Health Center in Boston, Vice President for Community Health at Children’s Hospital Boston, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, and a trustee of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, the New England Aquarium and the Kenneth B. Schwartz Center for Palliative Care.

He also served, as a public health advisor to Mayor Thomas Menino in Boston, was a founding commissioner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Catastrophic Illness in Children Relief Fund and advisor to the Dyson Foundation’s National Pediatric Training Initiative in Community Pediatrics.

He is a member of the Early Childhood Expert Panel for the American Academy of Pediatrics Bright Futures Project that is writing national standards for pediatric preventive health care.  In all these positions, he has continued his work as an advocate for children and their families helping create a cadre of programs directed to children and youth.

Dr. Carrillo is currently a trustee at the Queen of the Valley Medical Center and chairs the Board’s Community Benefit Committee.  He is a founding Board member of the Children’s Health Initiative of Napa County, a community-based project that ensures all children and youth in Napa County have health insurance and access to health care.
