Queen of the
Valley Medical Center Announces
The Opening of the Cancer Wellness Program
May 14, 2007
Napa, CA – This
week Queen of the Valley Medical Center announced the launch of a new
Cancer Wellness Program at the Wellness Center. The Cancer Wellness
Program is designed for cancer patients to aid in their recovery, and
prepares them for their future as a cancer survivor.
The goal is to help ease the effects of cancer and cancer treatments.
This holistic program focuses on improving the quality of life, the functional
performance, and the psychological well-being of cancer patients so that
body, mind and spirit needs are met. Behaviors such as maintaining
a healthy weight, staying physically active throughout life, and consuming
a healthy diet are important factors in the ongoing battle against cancer.
"An important goal of the Cancer Wellness Program is to help the
participants’ transition from cancer patients to proactive cancer
survivors. This goal fits well with the Mission of the Sisters of St.
Joseph, to continually improve the health and quality of life of those
in the communities we serve, "said Larry Hazen, Physical Therapist
and Manager of Rehabilitation Services for Queen of the Valley Medical
Center.
The approach is multi-disciplinary and involves
exercise, nutrition, psycho-social and spiritual support. National
studies indicate that programs
like the Cancer Wellness Program can mitigate certain side effects of
cancer treatment, such as nausea and fatigue. Last year’s Cancer
Wellness pilot program demonstrated hopeful outcomes both in the mitigation
of side effects and increasing quality of life during treatment.
The program is three months in length and is individually designed for
each cancer patient. Participants in the Cancer Wellness program will
benefit from the collaboration of physicians, physical therapists, nurses,
dietitians, stress counselors, personal trainers, fitness instructors
and others.
With the success of our Reach for the Stars event, Queen of the Valley
Hospital Foundation has launched a campaign to raise funds to help cancer
patients participating in the Cancer Wellness program. Ongoing fundraising
efforts have been planned to continue the scholarship program well into
the future.
“
We are thrilled and excited to offer this service to our community
and believe we are breaking new ground in cancer treatment,” said
Dick Green, Vice-President and Chief Development Officer for Queen
of the Valley Hospital Foundation.
Admission to the Cancer Wellness Program is through referral by a physician.
