During Your ER Visit

Why You May Have to Wait in the Emergency Room

Patients can walk into the Queen’s ER at any time - with any complaint. That’s why “triage,” the process of prioritizing patients based on urgency of need for care, is such an important part of the ER. A highly skilled, emergency care trained nurse begins that process as each patient registers.

Patients suffering from extremely serious, often life-threatening health problems will begin receiving care immediately. “Emergent” health problems often include:

  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Trauma
  • Acute asthma and COPD
  • Severe bleeding

Patients whose conditions are very serious but non-life threatening (such as fractures, dislocations, or cuts requiring stitches) may be treated quickly upon arrival.

Why We Need Your Consent

Whenever possible, consent will be obtained upon registration. The physician will then see you and complete a medical screening exam to determine a diagnosis and plan of treatment. Your medical or surgical condition will determine any further treatment as required.

Dealing With Possible Medical Bills

The cost of emergency care may include medications, supplies, lab work and X-rays.
You will receive a separate bill from physicians involved in your emergency care. They are not employed by the hospital and must bill separately for their services.

Visitors in the Emergency Room

It is often helpful for family and friends to accompany ER patients. At times, the number of visitors may be limited due to patient's need and protection of privacy. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and assistance in maintaining the number of ER visitors at a level that is comfortable for everyone who needs us.

Going Home

You are often given after-care instructions. We encourage you to ask questions to make sure you thoroughly understand the instructions before you leave. Occasionally you may be asked to schedule a follow-up appointment with your primary care physician in order to facilitate possible additional treatment and care.

Financial Assistance
