In robotic-assisted surgery, a form of minimally invasive surgery , the surgeon makes three tiny incisions and inserts three robotic arms into these incisions. He or she then sits at a console and controls three interactive robot arms – two with surgical instruments and the third with a tiny video camera. During the procedure, the video camera allows him or her to view the surgical site in great detail on a video screen with a 10x magnification. Procedures performed with the daVinci Surgical System require general anesthesia and a hospital stay.
Benefits of Robotics-Assisted Surgery
Robotics-assisted surgery carries with it the all the benefits of minimally invasive surgery due to the very small surgical incision needed, plus some additional ones:
- A clearer view of the surgical area: The control panel for the robotic system affords the surgeon a three-dimensional view of the area where he or she is performing the surgery.
- Greater dexterity: The robotic arms can perform highly precise, delicate maneuvers with a greater flexibility and dexterity than the human hand.
Types of Robotic Surgical Procedures at the Queen
