Queen of the Valley Medical Center Celebrates 50th Anniversary


Napa, CA – On Saturday, June 14, 2008, Queen of the Valley Medical Center is celebrating a milestone birthday and the community is invited.  Here is a list of events taking place.

Cake Competition
Noon to 4:00p.m.
Guests will have an opportunity to watch pastry chefs from Carneros Inn, Penelope Jane Wedding Cake & Edible Touches, Bouchon Bakery in Yountville, and Silverado Country Club, to name a few, in action.  Stop by the air-conditioned specialty tent to watch the chefs add finishing touches and fine decorating detail to their competition cakes.  These cakes will be cut and served to a judge’s panel for evaluation, starting at 1:00 p.m.   Judges will award a prize to the top 3 cakes, based on flavor, texture and representation of the theme.  Your vote will help determine which pastry chef will go home with the People’s Choice award. There will be a sample cake which mimics the flavor and texture of the decorated cake for guests to enjoy for only $1.00.  The cakes will be available for purchase via silent auction.  In a separate tent, free birthday cake will also be served.

Entertainment will be provided on two stages, offering music spanning five decades of your favorite tunes.

1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.  The Sun Kings 60’s & 70’s
2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.  The Poyntliss Sisters 80’s
3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.  Full Motion  All Five Decades

For the Kids
Noon – 4:00 p.m.
Kids can enjoy a fun filled day of activities that include juggling, magic tricks, and face painting.  When you’re ready for a break, be sure to stop by the Family Rest Area, located between Napa Valley Imaging and OSPC, for free water, sponsored by TUGBOAT, Inc.

Wine Pavilion
Noon – 4:00 p.m.
A variety of wines from a select group of local wineries will be served in the Friends of the Foundation Wine Pavilion.  Available for purchase will be a 50th Anniversary Commemorative wine glass and appetizer plate.  The set retails for $5.00 and includes three wine tasting tickets.  Additional wine tasting tickets may be purchased for $1.00 each.
Health and Wellness Fair
The Wellness Center and its team of experts have created an exciting and fun filled afternoon for all to enjoy. Activities planned are:

  • Fitness exhibitions performed by Synergy fitness instructors
    1:00pm  Hip Hop
    2:00pm  Thai Chi
    3:00pm  Kung Fu-kids
    3:30pm  Zumba
  • A healthy heart bean bag toss booth sponsored by the Cardiac Rehabilitation team
  • Therapeutic equipment demonstrations and a skit portraying physical, occupational and speech therapists from the Rehabilitation team
  • Diabetes Wellness Jeopardy Wheel
  • Fruit and vegetable Tick Tac Toe and Jeopardy sponsored by Nutritional Service Dietitians
    Bodybugg/ Weight Management demonstrations sponsored by Nutrition Services
  • Stress Mastery challenges provided by Steve Wood, Stress and Biofeedback Therapist
  • Community Outreach Advanced Directives for Patients skit
    2:30 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. (English)
    2:45 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. (Spanish)
  • Queen of the Valley Children’s Mobile Dental Clinic

11:30 a.m.
The parade will begin at the corner of Jefferson and G Street.  It will then travel down Jefferson, following the route used to move patients from the old Parks Victory Hospital to the Queen’s original front door.  Escorted by City of Napa Police, the parade will include vintage cars with local dignitaries and Queen staff members, the St. Helena Community Band playing onboard the Napa Trolley, old and new fire tucks and ambulances, the Queen’s Carriage and Dental van.  Bringing it home will be the Queen’s own motorcycle club. 

Bike Ride
Adults: Take a casual, mostly flat, scenic 18-mile bicycle ride around Napa.  Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. in the QVMC north parking lot.  Ride starts at 9:00 a.m.  The first 20 adults to register will receive either a Queen of the Valley t-shirt or bicycle jersey.  The remaining participants will receive a commemorative Queen of the Valley 50th Anniversary t-shirt.  Cost for the adult ride is $35.00. The adult ride is limited to 50 participants. 

Kids:  Children should arrive at 11:00 a.m. in Dr. McClure’s parking lot, located on the corner of Trancas and Jefferson.  Participating children (ages 4 – 12) are encouraged to decorate their bikes for the ride. There will be prizes awarded for the most creatively decorated girls and boys bicycles.  Parents must supervise their children for the fun ride.  There is no charge or registration for the children's fun ride. 

Robotic Tours
Starting at noon, Outpatient Surgery & Procedure Center staff members will be offering tours of the da Vinci Surgical System.  This state-of-the-art robotic platform provides surgeons with an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy.  When your done, be sure to visit the 1950 and 2008 ambulances parked in front of the OSPC.

Queen’s Collection
The Queen’s gift shop will have an outdoor booth selling commemorative 50th Anniversary items.  Read all about the history of the hospital in Queen of the Valley 50 Years by author Lin Weber.  Ms. Weber will be signing books from noon to 2:00 p.m.  Local artist, Jessel Miller, will also be on hand to sign the watercolor pieces she created especially for the hospital. 

Food Pavilion
Local food purveyors will be serving complementary small tastes that best represent their cooking style.  Enjoy the culinary delights of Any Thyme Catering, Dean & Deluca, Genova Delicatessen, La Morenita Market, Mi Favorita, Picnic People & Elaine Bell Catering, Trader Joe’s, Vallerga’s Market, and Ranch Market Too.

Hospital History Tours
Go back to March 3, 1958 and rediscover the original uses of the rooms in the 1958 hospital building.   Hear wonderful stories about the beginning days of Queen of the Valley as you’re guided through the oldest hospital building in small groups stopping at certain rooms to listen to a docent talk about how the room was used.  Tours start at 1:00 p.m. from the original hospital entrance.  Each tour will last approximately 25 minutes and are limited to 10 participants each.
