Napa Valley to host inaugural Start! Heart Walk April 11

WHAT: Start! Heart Walk, the American Heart Association’s premiere fundraising event that encourages physical activity and heart-healthy living.

The Napa Start! Heart Walk is one of more than 450 Heart Walks throughout the nation bringing together more than 1 million people for a common purpose. Join hundreds in the Napa Valley as they help themselves by taking the first steps toward a longer life, and help others by raising funds to save lives from the No. 1 and No. 3 killers of Americans: heart disease and stroke.

This year’s Heart Walk will feature:

  • Scenic 5K route options through beautiful Napa Valley College
  • Health expo
  • Healthy foods & educational booths
  • Kid’s zone
  • Family entertainment

WHEN: 8 a.m. to noon, Sunday, April 11

WHERE: Napa Valley Community College, 2277 Napa-Vallejo Highway

WHY: Research has shown that you can gain two hours of life expectancy for every one hour of regular, vigorous exercise that you do – even if you start in middle age.

The American Heart Association’s Start! program calls on all Americans and their employers to create a culture of physical activity and health in order to live longer, heart-healthy lives through walking.

Why Walking? Because walking is free, easy, and has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. It’s the simplest positive change individuals can make to effectively improve their heart health.

In fact, research has shown that the benefits of walking and physical activity for only 30 minutes a day include:

  • Reduced risk of coronary heart disease and stroke
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduction of high cholesterol and improved blood lipid profile
  • Reduced body fat
  • Enhanced mental well being
  • Increased bone density, which helps to prevent osteoporosis
  • Reduced risk of cancer
  • Reduced risk of non-insulin-dependant diabetes
  • Lots and lots of fun!
