(December 17, 2015—Napa, CA) Larry Coomes, FACHE, has joined the
administration team of Queen of the Valley Medical Center as Chief Operating
Officer (COO), effective immediately.
As COO, Coomes will have primary responsibility for the efficient operations
of Queen of the Valley, coordinating the operations of several key areas
and services, developing and implementing operational plans, as well as
overseeing inpatient and outpatient growth strategies. He will report
directly to President & CEO Walt Mickens.
Coomes most recently served as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Tenet
Health’s Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center in Palm Beach, FL. The
199-bed acute care hospital is similar in size and service to Queen of
the Valley, offering robotic surgery, neurosciences and cardiac care,
with an annual net revenue of $200 million and 30,000 annual emergency
room visits. During his three years there, Larry oversaw 900 employees
and 450 medical staff. He developed and received approval of a five-year
strategic plan to drive increased revenue and volumes; drove significant
improvements in clinical quality and patient safety by instituting an
open and transparent environment with a focus on trust and accountability;
and led a cultural overhaul resulting in major improvements to physician,
employee and patient satisfaction, among other successes. Prior to his
role at Tenet, Coomes served as CEO of Palmdale Regional Medical Center
in California.
“With more than 25 years of experience in business and executive
leadership, Coomes has a proven track record and excels in operations,”
said Walt Mickens, President & CEO, Queen of the Valley Medical Center.
“I am confident he will be a great asset to our hospital and an
excellent addition to our leadership team and community.”
During his career Coomes has overseen sales and marketing, business development
and franchising. He has served in several leadership positions with local
boards including the 2015 chairman of the American Heart Association’s
Go Red for Women fundraising campaign, where he helped raise more than
$400,000 for heart disease research and awareness in Florida.
Coomes holds a master’s of science in Business Administration from
the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, and a bachelor’s
of science in Business from Eastern Illinois University.
“My family and I are very excited to be part of this amazing community,”
said Coomes. “Napa is a beautiful and vibrant area and Queen of
the Valley is known for providing high-quality, compassionate care to
all. I look forward to working with the Queen’s dedicated care professionals
and community partners on making the hospital even more successful in
the future.”
Coomes is an avid golfer who enjoys community service and volunteering
on local boards. His wife, Shannon, is a cardiac nurse and his son, Lawson,
age 10, is an avid sportsman just like his dad.
